Reflections on Pedal Through (the film)

So, y'all know I won this bike earlier, right? Well, I've been digging into the whole sport of #mountainbiking. I'm watching lots of #youtube and #reddit. At this very same time, America decided to recognize - on a very public level - that black people are everywhere and do everything, even #birdwatching. I saw this wonderful video where being black and mountain biking both show up.

Now, I have been diversifying spaces for 52 years, especially the outdoors. I started as a Cub Scout when I was 8. I reached Vigil Honor in the Order of the Arrow (Scouting's "Honor Camper Society) at 15. I reached Eagle Scout at 18. I was on the Canoe Team in college, and now, I'm #mountainbiking and #nativeplant gardening. I am almost always one of a very few blacks out there on the rivers, trails, campsites, and nurseries but I love, love, love being there. Nature is a safe space when you are careful and it is soul satisfying when you allow it to be. You look up and see the multitudes of stars or hear the whisper of the trees and the songs of the birds, or you go eye to eye with an animal that is as large as you and you realize that you are a piece of a much larger puzzle.

The contest I won a couple of months ago was "adventure through biking." As I rebuild my body so I get ready for some bike adventure, what a joy it is to see this film and hear these women talk about their excursion.

Everybody needs to get out there, watch the stars and listen to the trees.

BTW, a hawk swooped down about 10 feet above me, the girls and Tara while we were in the yard today. It was incredible.
